How to Play
From download to trivia night in a few steps.
Play a solo game, join someone else's local game, or create a host account and run a game for nearby players. Multiplayer uses Bluetooth when available, with local Wi-Fi as a fallback—gameplay itself does not need internet.
Choose How to Play
Solo game
Choose solo play in the app to play on your own. No account is required.
Join someone else's game
Participants do not need an account. Enter the host's 4-letter join code, then choose a username and avatar to join the nearby game.
Host a game
Hosts need a TriviaPit account registered with an email and password. Hosting can work offline after a successful online sign-in and after the content you plan to use is downloaded to the host device.
Joining a Local Game
- Ask the host for the 4-letter join code shown in their lobby.
- Open the join flow and enter the code.
- Enter a username and choose an avatar; a participant account is not required.
- Allow the requested nearby connection permissions and stay close to the host.
- When a question appears, choose an answer before the host's timer expires.
A game has up to 10 rounds and can end earlier if only one player survives. Each question may have a text prompt, answer options, and an image.
How Scoring Works
- Survival: A correct answer raises your pillar by one unit. A wrong answer or timeout does not raise it.
- Lava: The lava rises by one unit each round. If it reaches your pillar, you are burned and cannot win.
- Starting buffer: Players start three units above the lava, providing a three-question buffer.
- Speed points: Correct answers also earn more speed points when answered faster. These points break ties.
- Rankings: Survivors are ordered by speed points. Burned players are ordered by pillar height, then speed points.
After answers are submitted or the timer ends, the game shows the correct answer, standings, and updated scores. If everyone answers early, the round can advance before the timer runs out.
Hosting a Local Game
- Sign in while online. Create an account with an email and password. To host offline, sign in online at least once every 7 days.
- Open Host mode. TriviaPit creates a 4-letter join code for your lobby. Share it with the nearby players you want to join.
- Choose content. Pick a category available to your account and on your device. Offline hosting requires downloaded questions and images.
- Set the timer. Choose 10, 20, or 30 seconds for each question.
- Start the game. TriviaPit connects and synchronizes the players before play begins. The host device manages the game and timing.
- Play and view results. Questions run for up to 10 rounds, ending earlier if only one player survives. When the game ends, review rankings and return to the lobby to play again.
The host's device is authoritative for game state and timing. Participants should remain connected: if someone disconnects during a game, they cannot be re-synchronized into that game, but the host can continue with connected players.
Internet, Bluetooth, and Offline Play
TriviaPit uses Bluetooth when available and can fall back to a local Wi-Fi network connection. Once devices are connected locally, gameplay does not require internet. Participants can join locally without an account.
When Hosts Need Internet
- To create an account, sign in, purchase categories, or download content.
- To refresh host access: hosts must sign in online at least once every 7 days to keep hosting offline.
- To activate a Weekend Party Pass, which needs server time when a game starts.
Continue Offline
On startup, the app checks for internet to sync account access and content. If there is no response after about 5 seconds, you can choose Continue Offline to use content already cached on the device. Offline use is limited to content that has already been downloaded and access that has not expired.
If the host's device clock moves backward by more than 2 seconds since its last online sign-in, hosting may be blocked until the host signs in online again. This check helps protect offline access windows.
Categories and Purchases
Three categories are free. Hosts can also purchase additional category access through the Apple App Store or Google Play. Purchase options described in the gameplay guide include one-time category purchases, category-credit bundles, Lifetime All-Access, and a Weekend Party Pass. Prices and options are shown in the app stores.
- Single category or 3-pack: Category purchases and credits are redeemed in Settings > Purchases & Access. Unused credits do not expire.
- Lifetime All-Access: One-time purchase for current and future categories, subject to downloading content to each device.
- Weekend Party Pass: A consumable pass provides access to all TriviaPit categories for 96 hours after activation. It activates when the host starts a game, not at purchase.
Prepare for Offline Hosting
- Connect to the internet and sign in to the host account.
- Sync and download the category questions and images you plan to use.
- For a Party Pass, download all included content and complete its integrity checks before starting the game to activate the pass.
- Once content is ready, host over Bluetooth or local Wi-Fi without internet, subject to the access window for your account.
Party Pass access lasts for 96 continuous hours, even if the app is closed. New games started after it expires use free and permanently owned categories; a game already underway can finish. Category downloads are associated with the host account and need to be downloaded again on a different device.
For purchase help, see TriviaPit Support. Store purchases and billing are handled by Apple or Google.
